Mendy closes week of presentations at Real Madrid
Ferland Mendy was presented as a Real Madrid player on Wednesday lunchtime, ending an eight-day period in which four players have been introduced at the Santiago Bernabeu.
First up was Luka Jovic; a day later it was Eden Hazard, the jewel in Madrid’s new-look crown; on Tuesday, Rodrygo Goes made his hotly anticipated landing in the Bernabeu authority; and Mendy adjusted the rundown on Wednesday.
There is still Eder Militao to come, who is currently on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America, notwithstanding any further exchanges.
Mendy arrives at Madrid to compete with one of the most questioned players in the squad last season: Marcelo. Zinedine Zidane was very keen for Los Blancos to seal the signing of the left-back as he views him as a long-term replacement for Marcelo, while his landing is a further poke to Sergio Reguilon and Theo Hernandez that they should search somewhere else for first-group football next season.
Raymond Kopa was the club’s French ambassador on the pitch during Madrid’s first dominant spell in Europe, where he won three European Cups, while the modern era has been dominated by Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane, two of the players who helped the club win four Champions League trophies in five years. Notwithstanding them, in addition to Zidane obviously, Mendy will presently frame a piece of Madrid’s history.
Should things fall into place, there could be another Frenchman on the way, too: Paul Pogba.
