John Stones hooked the ball off the line to deny Liverpool from taking the lead
Liverpool were denied the lead against Manchester City by just 11mm after John Stones cleared the ball off the line.
The Citizens somehow managed to clear the danger after Sadio Mane initially hit the post after being slid through on goal in the 18th minute.
Roberto Firmino picked out the Senegalese international, who looked to have broken the deadlock, only for his shot to ricochet off the post.
Stones then got back into position and proceeded to hoof the ball away, but he smashed the clearance against Ederson.
The ball then bounced towards the goal as Stones hurtled back to get in before Mohamed Salah – somehow stopping it from crossing the line.
Even on replays it looked as though the ball had trickled in, only for the hawk-eye technology to show just how close it was.
Speaking of the incident, Graeme Souness said: « How Salah doesn’t get the follow-up here… anything on the ball and it ends up in the back of the net. »
And Liverpool were made to rue for the missed opportunity, as they went into the break a goal down against City.
Sergio Aguero rifled home the opener from an acute angle in what was his seventh home goal for the club against the Reds.
The Argentinian striker beat Dejan Lovren at the near post as he got on the end of a low Bernardo Silva cross, before firing home past Alisson.
