Copa del Rey quarter-final draw sees repeat of last year’s final


Friday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final draw saw holders Barcelona paired with Sevilla in the tie of the round, in what is a rehash of a year ago’s conclusive.

Sevilla out to avenge for 5-0 last thrashing by Barcelona

Barça, the competition’s most decorated club with 30 titles, memorably thumped Sevilla 5-0 in last season’s show-stopper to secure their fourth straight Copa crown.

The Blaugrana, who today escaped punishment for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Levante in the last 16, are offering to wind up the main club to lift the trophy five years consecutively.


Girona take on Real Madrid after downing Atlético


Meanwhile, Girona were rewarded for dumping out Atlético Madrid – and achieving the last eight for the principal event in their history – with a clash against 19-time winners Real Madrid.

Somewhere else, Getafe were pitted against Valencia and Espanyol will confront Real Betis.

The quarter-final first legs are to be played on 22, 23 and 24 January, with the returns scheduled for 29, 30 and 31 January.
